My Peace I Give You by Dawn Eden
Today is the feast of St. Maria Goretti!
She is the patron of youth, young women, purity, and victims of rape. She was a very courageous young woman, one who stood firm in her beliefs and after her death she appeared to her attacker forgiving him. We can all learn something from her. She has a really fascinating story, if you don’t know it, read about it here.
Recently Dawn Eden wrote a book, My Peace I Give You, Healing Sexual Wounds with the Help of the Saints. This book is written from a thoughtful and careful perspective. Ms. Eden took a courageous step sharing wisdom on a subject that needs much attention. The book reflects the lives of over 10 Saints, the injustice they suffered and the way they became healed in Christ. Seeking forgiveness, sharing in Christ’s passion and drawing closer to God are just some of the subjects that Ms. Eden explores.
She points out that ‘This process of forgiveness is ongoing’ and
‘All suffering contains within it the opportunity to become more like the One who suffered on the Cross.’
I think it’s also important to express Ms. Eden’s concerns found on Page 43, ‘At this point, it is important to bring clarity to an area where there has been some controversy among Christian therapists and pastoral counselors: asking Jesus to heal the wounds of past sufferings does not require consciously revisiting each of those sufferings. If a disturbing memory does come to mind, I can and should offer it up for healing. However-and I cannot express this enough-God’s healing power is not limited by our conscious memory.’
I highly recommend this book especially for those who have suffered sexual abuse and for anyone who works with youth. As a former youth minister and current campus minister, I have encountered many young people who are seeking healing from their past. The right counselor and this book can help aid in the process. Researchers estimate that in our country about 1 out of 6 boys and 1 out of 4 girls (some say 1 out of 3) are sexually abused, chances are you know of someone. Do me a favor, read this book and think of one man or woman in your life that might benefit from reading it. Begin now by praying for that person. You can help another on their path to healing and forgiveness.
